The Managing Director of Rod and Cones Eye Clinic Dr. Akwasi Agyeman Ahmed, has called on the government to help train more personnel to deal with the deficit of skilled specialists in eye treatment in the country.
He says, the government should also prioritize infrastructure in the health sector to make it more sensitive to the treatment of eye diseases to help manage the situation which he described as “alarming.”
Dr. Ahmed was speaking to TVNEWSGH.COM on the sidelines at the opening of a new branch of Rods and Cones Eye Clinic, Tanoso in the Kwadaso Municipality.
It is the second branch of the Clinic which specialises in the treatment of diseases affecting the eye including surgery using a cutting edge technology.
Dr. Ahmed observed that there are three common eye diseases increasingly, affecting the Ghanaian population, including glaucoma which damages the optic nerve of the eye which is vital for good vision.
The other disease he talked about was Cataract which forms when protein builds up in the lens of the eye and makes it cloudy and keeps light from passing through clearly.
The last one is Refractive which results in a blurred image which can cause blindness.
Dr Ahmed indicated that eye diseases in the country have become alarming which calls for urgent measures to stop the surge.
He expressed grave concern about the limited number of optometrists to take care of the over 30 million population in Ghana.
He proposed that the government should include the treatment of eye diseases in the list of health conditions covered by the National Health Insurance scheme to enable patients to meet the high cost of treatment.
