Let My Vote Count Alliance a pressure has back a call for the compilation of new voters register. Saying, the new voters register is eminent.
The group indicated, the call for new register is not new in Ghana’s political discourse.
Speaking at the press confab in Kumasi, the leader of the group, Mr. Davide Asante noted that since the dawn of the fourth republic in 1992 electoral reforms have always been instituted by EC has been the initiatives of individuals outside EC.
“Today, the call for a new voters’ register emanates from the EC itself, the body mandated by Article 46 of the 1982 constitution as the election management body of Ghana” he said
Mr. Asante appreciates the fact that EC has not remain static but also has heeded to the input of the stakeholders and its own internal processes to evolve in order to conform with the modern trends and best practices in election management.
He noted that in 2015/16 Let My Vote Count Alliance and its allies kicked against the current register but their efforts were fiercely resisted by the election management body as well as some political parties.
Talking about the Justice VCRAC Crabbe Committee set up by EC to investigate their claims, Mr. Asante explained that it was to discredit their agitation.
“Supreme Court ruling in Abu Ramadan & Evans Nimako V EC & AG in 2016 which the court held that the NHIS Card was not a valid form of ID for voter registration, the court further directed the EC to expunge from the voters register the names of all persons who registered with NHIS Card. The LMVCA maintains that this has not been effectively carried out by the EC thereby rendering the current voters register bloated and not fit for purpose” Mr Asante
He then commend the EC for for finally agrees to compile new credible register which corroborates with their long-held position.
He was surprised that the announcement by the EC to compile new register has met with fierce resistance by some people.
“Ironically, the announcement of the compilation of a new voters register has again met with fierce resistance from some civil society organizations and political parties prominent among which is the NDC” he reiterated
Mr. Asante opined that all the argument advanced by the EC for the new register are legitimate and asked the good people of Ghana not be sway by the NDC’s propaganda.
The Inter-party Resistance Against New Voter Register yesterday took to the high streets of Kumasi Metropolis to press home their demand sending warning to the EC not to temper with the current register since it is credible.
He therefore charged the EC to undertake an effective exercise similar to what was undertaken in both 2008 and 2012 election years.
He then pledged LMVCA support to the EC decision to do new register.
Davide Asante arguably encouraged all Ghanaians 18 years and above to actively take part in the registration to have their names on the register.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) rubbished the NDC and other political parties position against the register.
Other member include Ernest Owusu Bempah, John Hall were at the press conference.
