The Second Vice Chairman for Suame Constituency of New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Richard Asante, has described it as a lie, the claim by the Minority in Parliament that Ghanaians without Ghana Card and Passport will be disenfranchised in the upcoming general election.
Such claim, according to him, Constitutes a propaganda being peddled by members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in their resistance to the compilation of the new voters register.
Mr. Asante , was reacting to a call made by Hon Haruna Iddrisu , Minority Leader in Parliament asking Ghanaians to prevent the EC from compiling the register.
Mr Asante disclosed that Electoral Commission (EC) had put before Parliament a Constitutional Instrument (CI) to amend the Cl 91 to allow the commission to use only Ghana card and passport for citizenship identification .
According to him, the CI before parliament is expected to mature and approved by parliament by mid of June, to Pave way for the EC to compile the register.
Mr Asante said during the new registration Ghanaians without Ghana Card and Passport will be registered.
According to him, those with the two documents after registering, can
guarantee for others without Ghana Card and Passport to register same.
He disclosed that during the Ghana Card registration, those without passport and birth certificates were vouched by others who had already registered.
“EC will use Ghana Card and Passport for citizenship identification but anybody who doesn’t have any of such documents, will be guaranteed by someone who has successfully registered for the voter ID.” Mr Asante said.
The Vice Chairman regretted NDC has taken unflinching position to resist such exercise after their series of demonstration became unsuccessful.
Mr Asante therefore advised the leadership of NDC to seek redress in the Supreme Court if the new CI presented to parliament is inconsistent with any provision in the Constitution adding Hon Haruna Iddrisu, should stop the unnecessary noice on the new voter registration.
