The Forestry Commission, Ghana has reached a memorandum of understanding between Domestic Lumber Millers Association of Ghana (DOLMAG) and Timber Utilization Contract Holders (TUC) holders to ensure members trade in only legal timber on international and local market.
According to tye agreement, the chainsaw operators are declared illegal and cannot be accepted on the market.
At the short ceremony in Kumasi to officially sign the partnership, the Operation’s Manager for Timber Industry Development Division, Mr. Eshun Hayford indicated that this agreement will afford them a greater opportunity to do their business and also to meet an international standard.
He added that the Association of Ghana (DOLMAG) and the Domestic Lumber Traders Association (DOLTA) will be under one umbrella to trade in legal timber.
The Timber industry Development Division who plays a supervisory role in the timber trade and industry in Ghana has therefore come out with strategic initiative, the Domestic Timber Trade Network (DOTTNE!) Process as an alternative to address the supply of legal timber on the domestic market to meet the ever increasing demand.
Speaking to the Journalists after the ceremony, Mr. Eshun called on the parties involved in the partnership to do well to sustain to the roles and regulations to allow them remove all the illegal activities from the system.
Mr. Eshun noted that this MOU is to facilitate business arrangement between TUC Holders and DOLMAG to trade in legal timber on the domestic market it is to spell out the terms and conditions for the general framework under which the parties involved will respect their responsibilities in the process of supplying legal timber.
Oseadeyo Kwesi Kani, Omanhene of Twifo Atimokwa, the Chairman of TUC holders believes that the move will provide them all the necessary support to do their business.
He observed that the chainsaw operators illegal activities destroy the forest and they do not even pay royalties to the traditional leaders.
He advised that the Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) will go a long way to protect their business.
