Implementors of No Business As Usual Project have organised a capacity building event for close to hundred local porters “Kayaye” operating within Asokore Mampong Municipality in Ashanti region.
This was a fulfilment of a descision hatched by officials in their quest towards ensuring that “Kayayes” within and beyond the Municipality earn value to their life and profession through NBU’s training program on Core Life Skills such as financial literacy, goal setting, conflict management and decent work.
The event targeted the promotion of professionalism and help rebrand the phase of their profession in Kumasi and Ghana as a whole.
Dubbed “Kayaye, I Can Be a Professional”, it was held through a collaboration with EMB Ahenfie, a social Enterprise that works with Kayayes in the Municipality by training them in hand skills that enable them to have extra source of income while motivating them to aspire for higher heights.
The “Kayayes” aged between 18-35 after massing up in their numbers at the Hub of No Business as Usual located at As Kore Mampong on the 19th September 2019 were again equipped with knowledge visavis the appropriate institutions they can consult for assistance when faced with issues such as abuse, sexual harrassment, bullying and other support they may need.
Other objectives of the event was to get the connected to like-minded individuals they can learn from.
They were again briefed on opportunities available to them through NBU project and beyond.
Speaking as a resource person, Madam Esther Nyarko (Director of Social Welfare atvAsokore Mampong Municipality) challenged them on need to embrace other alternative income generating activities so as to be more able to carter for themselves and family than depending only on head potting profession for a living.
She also encouraged them to develop the habit of saving by opening account at credible financial institutions and also ensure effective utilization of their daily earnings.
The event took the form of learner centered discussions and varied activity-based peer learning modules.
ABOUT NBU PROJECT
No Business as Usual (NBU) is a collaborative project implemented by SOS Children’s Villages Ghana and the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly. The European Union is the major sponsor of the NBU Project.
The project seeks to stimulate youth employment and inclusive socioeconomic growth through joint stakeholder collaboration between the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly, CSOs and the private sector.
Objectives of the NBU Project are;
a. Providing training and coaching in entrepreneurship and employability skills targeting 500 youth,as well as organising business networking events through to impact 5000 youth,
b.Enhancing the capacity of Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly to collaborate with CSOs and Private sector to improve revenue mobilisation for local development, promote transparency and social accountability to citizens and pilot two(2) Social Businesses and three (3) Public Private Partnerships in the Municipality.
